Top 10 Entertainment News for 2009!
Here’s a look at the top 10 biggest entertainment events, controversies and issues that left majority of us shocked, awed and inspired from ABS-CBN News.
Top 10: John Lloyd Cruz- Ruffa Gutierrez brewing romance?
It started with a denial. Even before the confirmation that Cruz and fashion editor Liz Uy had called it quits, reports about the young actor’s romance with an older Gutierrez were already circling the 4 corners of show business. Cruz and Gutierrez denied the rumor. It would have ended with their repeated denials, but Gutierrez’s mom, the feisty Annabelle Rama, had stepped in the picture. Rama slammed Cruz for denying that he was courting her only daughter. The rumor further sizzled after a photo of Cruz and Gutierrez entering a posh hotel in the United States has been posted in the Internet. Cruz soothed the angry mom by discussing the issue during a dinner at Gutierrez’s home. Cruz and Gutierrez appeased the curious public by maintaining that the two of them are just friends. The issue ended with a denial.
Top 9: Willie Revillame was forced to go on leave from “Wowowee” due to his remark during former president Corazon Aquino’s funeral procession.
As the whole nation stood still while Aquino was being brought to her final resting place, Revillame created a big stir for ordering the removal of the live streaming of the former leader’s procession on his popular show. A visibly irked Revillame asked to stop the airing of Mrs. Aquino’s cortege from La Salle Green Hills to Manila Cathedral, which was being beamed live simultaneously with “Wowowee.” The controversial host explained that it was inappropriate to broadcast it while they were having fun inside the studio. The public, however, branded Revillame’s move as “utterly disrespectful” and “damn stupid.” Amid the mounting criticisms, Revillame went on an indefinite leave. After more than a month, he returned to “Wowowee” to a fiesta-like welcome.
Top 8: Celebrities were not spared by the wrath of typhoon Ondoy.
When Ondoy rammed the country, thousands of Filipinos, including celebrities, fled to safety as floodwaters entered their homes and rose to dangerous levels. Even celebrities became stranded on their rooftops for hours before rescue came. A very frightened Cristine Reyes tearfully appealed for rescue. Her friend, actor Richard Gutierrez, braved the heavy downpour and saved Reyes, her family and some of her neighbors. K Brosas, Jean Garcia and daughter Jennica were also trapped when floodwaters began to rise. At the height of Ondoy’s fury, celebrities also aided their neighbors despite the dangers. Gerald Anderson and Jericho Rosales were among those heralded as heroes for helping other storm victims.
Top 7: Weddings of the year – Judy Ann Santos-Ryan Agoncillo , Korina Sanchez-Mar Roxas nuptials.
Santos and Agoncillo tied the knot, minus all the fanfares that usually accompany the unions of high-profile couples. Many praised Santos and Agoncillo for successfully keeping the biggest event of their lives very solemn and away from public eye. The wedding of Korina Sanchez and Sen. Mar Roxas wedding, however, was the total opposite. Dubbed as the “people’s wedding,” many people trooped to a Quezon City church where the ceremony, extensively covered by the media, was held. It was even aired live on television. It was also known as the “political wedding of the year.” The ceremony was held with only 3 weeks left before the start of the filing of the certificate of candidacy for the May 2010 polls. Roxas is running for vice president in 2010 elections.
Top 6: Politics and entertainment. Artists are running for public posts.
Edu Manzano, Ara Mina, Herbert Bautista , Alma Moreno, Cesar Montano, Richard Gomez, Lani Mercado, Joey Marquez, and Tado. After months of speculations, these celebrities finally unveiled their plans to run in 2010 elections. Most are only eyeing local posts, while some are gunning for national positions. Manzano, for instance, accepted the offer of the Lakas-Kampi-CMD party to be its vice president. He is the running mate of Gilbert Teodoro. Usually, political parties woo some celebrities to join the political fray as they bank on their popularity to win votes come election time.
Top 5: Arnel Pineda, Charice, and Rhap Salazar take US by storm.
Charice, Pineda and Salazar were among the biggest newsmakers this year following their recognition in the international music scene. Charice officially launched her first international single called “Note To God” on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” After the 17-year-old songstress, Pineda also made a special appearance on Oprah with his group, American rock band “Journey.” Salazar has yet to be invited by Winfrey, but he already made his mark after winning in an international singing contest. Salazar later appeared in American talk show “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.”
Top 4: Pinoy films, stars get recognition abroad.
The Filipino singers are not the only ones making their mark in the international scene. Filipino filmmakers have also been honored in various prestigious film festivals abroad. Among these exceptionally talented Pinoy independent filmmakers are Brillante Mendoza and Pepe Diokno. Mendoza picked up the best director prize at the Cannes film festival for his dark movie “Kinatay.” Diokno, on the other hand, won at the 66th Venice Film Festival for his film “Engkwentro.” Filipino television shows also received nominations abroad, the most recent were “Eva Fonda” and “Lobo.”
Top 3: International, local celebrity deaths
As what CNN reported, the year 2009 seems to have been filled with an inordinate amount of high-profile deaths. In Hollywood, there were the deaths of Michael Jackson, Farrah Fawcett, Natasha Richardson, Bea Arthur, Dom DeLuise, Karl Malden, David Carradine, Patrick Swayze, John Hughes, Ed McMahon, Walter Cronkite, Don Hewitt, and most recently Britanny Murphy.
In the local showbiz, the industry also lost Francis Magalona, Johnny Delgado, Bernard Bonnin, Berting Labra and Tita Muñoz.
Top 2: Manny Pacquiao’s alleged illicit affair with young sexy actress Krista Ranillo.
The Pacquiao-Ranillo alleged romantic affair had hogged the limelight late this year, even overshadowing the much-hyped showdowns between the People’s Champ and Britain’s Ricky Hatton and Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto. The alleged affair spread like wildfire and had been a favorite and hot topic among Filipinos, who expressed mixed reactions on the issue. While majority expressed support for Pacquiao’s wife, Jinkee, some also defended Ranillo. Pacquiao and the Ranillo family have repeatedly denied the affair. Pacquiao has strongly belied the rumored romance. Ranillo, for her part, has yet to personally dispute the allegations.
Top 1: Hayden Kho sex video scandal
The biggest scandal to have rocked the entertainment industry this year is the sex video scandal of embattled doctor Hayden Kho. It all started with Kho and Katrina Halili’s “Careless Whisper” video. It became a full-blown scandal after the doctor’s sex videos with various women, including Halili and Maricar Reyes, have been widely circulated in the Internet. Some of these women were reportedly unaware that Kho was already videotaping their sexual encounters. Pirated DVD copies of the sex videos have also been peddled in the streets of Manila. Kho has already been charged before a Pasig court for violating Republic Act (RA) 9262 or the Anti-Violence Against Women and Children Act.
