Angelina Jolie visits camp for Syrian refugees in Turkey calls it “Global Crisis”!

ISTANBUL | Oscar-winning actress Angelina Jolie on Saturday called for more international action to help refugees as she visited a camp in southeastern Turkey housing thousands of Syrians who fled their war-torn country.

The Hollywood star and special envoy of the United Nations refugee agency visited the camp in Mardin on World Refugee Day with UNHCR chief Antonio Guterres, after meeting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who was also in the city.

“We are here for a simple reason: this region is at the epicenter of a global crisis,” Jolie told reporters.

“We should call this what it is: not just a ‘refugee crisis,’ but a crisis of global security and governance, that is manifesting itself in the worst refugee crisis ever recorded -– and a time of mass displacement,” she said.

Jolie and Guterres’s visit came after the U.N. said Thursday that the number of people forced to flee war, violence and persecution has soared to a record 59.5 million, half of them children.

The huge tide of displaced people has grown by 8.3 million since 2013 — the highest-ever increase in a single year.

“My first message is that it is due time for people to respect the plight of refugees and see their value. We must protect them, and invest in them. They are not a problem, they are part of the solution to this global crisis,” Jolie said.

“I plead to the international community and leaders of the world to recognise what this moment in mass human displacement means. This is not just another day.”

The mother of six, including three adopted children, thanked Turkey and other countries who have provided shelter to large numbers of refugees.

Turkey, which has taken in 1.8 million Syrian refugees since the conflict started in 2011, has repeatedly complained that it has been left to shoulder an unfair burden.

During her visit, Jolie met with Syrian refugees and heard how they had escaped their country. She was spotted earlier Saturday walking around Mardin and visiting local shops accompanied by her eldest daughter Shiloh.

On Friday, the pair had been in Lebanon, also to visit Syrian refugee camps.

Jolie has made several visits to countries neighboring Syria since the war began more than years ago.

Angelina Jolie had ovaries and fallopian tubes removed over cancer fear!

Oscar-winning film star Angelina Jolie said she has had her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed to avoid the risk of ovarian cancer, the disease that killed her mother at the age of 56.

The announcement in a New York Times column printed on Tuesday came nearly two years after the rights campaigner and mother-of-six had a double mastectomy after hearing she had also inherited a high risk of breast cancer.

Jolie, 39, said she had gone public with her decision to tell other women about the options available to them.

“I feel feminine, and grounded in the choices I am making for myself and my family. I know my children will never have to say, ‘Mom died of ovarian cancer,’” Jolie wrote.

The procedure had triggered menopause, she added. “I will not be able to have any more children, and I expect some physical changes. But I feel at ease with whatever will come, not because I am strong but because this is a part of life. It is nothing to be feared.”

Jolie, who also lost her aunt and grandmother to cancer, underwent the laparoscopic bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy last week after blood tests revealed possible indicators of early cancer.

She said doctors had told her she had a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer due to an inherited genetic mutation.

Husband Brad Pitt flew to her side from France hours after she told him about the test, she wrote. “The beautiful thing about such moments in life is that there is so much clarity. You know what you live for and what matters. It is polarizing, and it is peaceful,” she added.

Jolie, who won an Oscar as best supporting actress in the 1999 film “Girl, Interrupted” based her earlier decision to undergo a double mastectomy on news that she had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer.

Her announcement of that decision in a New York Times op-ed in May 2013 was widely lauded by celebrities, cancer survivors and medical professionals for its openness.

She wrote in Tuesday’s article, titled “Diary of a Surgery,” that no signs of cancer were discovered in removed tissue and that she had has a progesterone IUD inserted to help maintain hormonal balance and help prevent uterine cancer.

“It is not possible to remove all risk, and the fact is I remain prone to cancer,” she said.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says about 20,000 women get ovarian cancer and about 14,500 die from it every year in the United States.

Vnity Jolie

Below are some excerpts from the interview:

On her marriage to Brad Pitt: “It does feel different. It feels nice to be husband and wife.”

On her political activities: “When you work as a humanitarian, you are conscious that politics have to be considered. Because if you really want to make an extreme change, then you have a responsibility. But I honestly don’t know in what role I would be more useful—I am conscious of what I do for a living, and that [could] make it less possible.”

On befriending Louis Zamperini, the subject of her new film Unbroken: “It was an extremely moving experience to watch someone watching their own life…someone so physically strong… and they are at the stage where their body is giving up. And yet we laughed together, and talked about his mom. And being a man of such faith, he talked about all the people he believed he would be seeing on the other side. And that it would bring him peace. After a life of fighting, he could rest.”
