Below are some excerpts from the interview:
Gwen on not creating mainstream music: “We’ve never fit into any format. Luckily we’ve been able to fit into both [pop and rock] a little bit, though not really consciously… We’ve just managed to nudge our way in.”
Adrian on the band members needing to compromise: “We’ve learned really well how to compromise with each other for the sake of keeping the band together. There’s times where I’m not going to be happy with 100% of everything on the record, where we’ve learned how to let go of those little things and being so idealistic.”
Tony on the reason for the new record: “When we did [the 2009 reunion] tour, it was the waking of the dead. Not only did we get our confidence back, on top of that it gave us the feeling of not needing to rush. All these amazing people were still coming out to see us, so we thought, ‘Let’s make the best record we can make now.’ We wouldn’t have this record if we didn’t do that tour.”

On who inspires him:
“Michael Jackson is my inspiration. For me, he’s the greatest—he’s the King of Pop – and everything I do, I do to be the greatest.”
On dealing with fame:
“Your life is out there a lot more, especially nowadays when everybody has a HD camera phone on them at all times. But my whole career launched from the Internet, so without it, I feel like I wouldn’t even be here. I owe a lot of my success to social media, to Twitter, to YouTube and Facebook. It is also a great way to interact with fans.”
On his recording routine:
“The studio’s filled with people I like and trust. Sometimes the lights in the booth have to be dimmed and I have a few candles, but other than that, that’s it.”
