MANILA – Actress Jodi Sta. Maria stayed at Jolo Revilla’s bedside until the Cavite vice-governor was conscious after sustaining a gunshot wound to the chest, according to showbiz columnist and TV host Lolit Solis.
Solis, the talent manager of Jolo’s parents Sen. Bong Revilla and Lani Mercado, thanked Sta.
Jolo has been confined at the intensive care unit of the Asian Hospital and Medical Center in Muntinlupa. He was rushed to the hospital Saturday after he supposedly shot himself by accident while cleaning his government-issued gun, a .40 Glock pistol, at the house of his father in Ayala Alabang.
Sta. Maria first confirmed her relationship with Jolo in late 2012.
Atty. Raymond Fortun, spokesperson of the Revilla family, said on Sunday that he was able to speak with Jolo before he underwent a two-hour operation to clean his wounds.
“He was a little bit sorry. Sabi niya, ‘Heto, attorney, nagkamali ako,'” shared Fortun. “I would think he was referring to the fact that he was cleaning his gun at that time and somehow nakalabit niya ‘yung trigger.”
What Jolo said on night before accident
Solis was the first to issue a statement on Jolo’s accident on Saturday, saying the gunshot wound appeared to be “self-inflicted.” She surmised that the accident had something to do with Jolo’s “depression” over the recent events involving his father, including the legal moves to transfer the detained lawmaker to a regular prison cell.
The outspoken talent manager recalled that the night before Jolo’s accident, they were talking about criticisms against him in connection with the onscreen tandem of Sta. Maria and actor Richard Yap, her leading man in the defunct daytime series “Be Careful With My Heart.”
But what concerned Jolo more, Solis said, was the condition of his father.
Tinatanong kung okay nga ‘yung papa niya,” she said, noting that she had just recently visited Sen. Revilla.
The senator is currently detained at the Philippine National Police Custodial Center for graft and plunder in connection with the pork barrel scam.
Sen. Revilla is also beset by other problems such as the garnishment of his assets and the accusation that he sneaked out of his detention cell to drop by the 91st birthday celebration of fellow detained Senator Juan Ponce Enrile at the Phililippine National Police General Hospital last February 14.
Solis said she would not be surprised if Jolo’s mishandling of the gun had something to do with his emotional state at the time.
May depression siyang [pinagdadaanan]. Baka nga nagkamali nga ng paglilinis ng baril, nagkamali sa pagkaka-ano, dahil nga doon sa depression na nadarama niya,” she said.
Bong inconsolable, says Lolit
Solis said Sen. Revilla has been inconsolable after learing of Jolo’s accident. The older Revilla has already filed a petition before the Sandiganbayan asking that he be allowed to visit his son at the hospital.
Solis also expressed her support for Mercado, who she said now stands as the family’s backbone amid the trials they are facing. “Sa kanilang lahat, saludo ako kay Lani Mercado, eh,” she said. “Habang nasa kulungan ang asawa mo, heto ang anak mo. And to think, she’s coping.
