TV5 programs that touch the heart of people’s lives!

Breaking the typecasting of television as the “idiot box” offering nothing but momentary gratification, TV5 through its primetime programs could be credited in impacting the lives of the people that it touches.

Three of its programsEnchanted Garden, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (EMHE) Philippines and Dancing Nation: A Talentadong Pinoy Special, have been praised for bringing some of the country’s pressing concerns to primetime TV.

 EG+awarding

Last year, Enchanted Garden was awarded the Gawad Muyong by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) as a result of the show’s efforts in raising public awareness about saving the environment. The Kapatid Network’s first eco-fantasya was also recognized for bringing environmental issues closer to viewers.

More than just entertaining Filipinos, TV5 also featured the struggles and triumphs of ordinary Pinoys by showcasing them on the small screen. EMHE Philippines was recently named a Finalist to the 2013 New York Festivals. Based on the original Endemol worldwide TV hit, the Philippine edition proved that lives can indeed be changed one home at a time. The cause-oriented show successfully reached out to families and communities that deserved a new lease on life, beginning with a home that they can call their own.

 TP+Dancing+Nation

Another example of entertainment-cum-civic action is when three hundred dancers from Laua-an, Antique emerged victorious during the first Dancing Nation: A Talentadong Pinoy Special last weekend. They won P1million in cash to help their town’s “Operation: Timbang” program that combats malnutrition especially among children. The town of Laua-an beat dancers representing Alaminos (Pangasinan), Infanta (Quezon), Jose Panganiban (Camarines Norte), Tupi (South Cotabato), Rodriguez (Rizal) and Calauag (Quezon).

The Talentadong Pinoy special is more than just a dance competition and allows the participating towns or communities to articulate their people’s concerns to a much greater audience. Celebrities like Alice Dixson, Arnell Ignacio and Audie Gemora even gave their personal contributions to the featured causes after seeing each town’s commitment through dance.

With the success of Enchanted Garden, EMHE Philippines and Dancing Nation, TV5 proves that building a more united Philippines remains at the heart of its programs. In the huge task of bringing the fruits of development to every Filipino, the Kapatid Network remains committed to its mission of sharing with our countrymen its own brand of bayanihan spirit as the nation looks forward to the challenges of the 21st century.

Astroboy wins ‘Talentadong Pinoy Battle of Champions’!

Astroboy, a Filipino-American hula-hoop and fire dancer, was declared the “Talentadong Pinoy” Ultimate Talentado on Sunday night, besting seven other finalists in a spectacular conclusion to the third season of TV5′s top-rated talent search.

Astroboy is a longtime New York resident who came to the Philippines last year to flee a bad relationship.

He joined “Talentadong Pinoy” after relatives raved about his burning hula hoop act at an aunt’s party.

“That was a world-class performance!” Ruffa Gutierrez, one of the 10 celebrity judges who evaluated the performance night on Saturday, said after Astroboy literally set the stage on fire with his unique act.

Actor-director Audie Gemora called it “out-of-this-world” and “amazing”.

Joey de Leon suggested that Astroboy, whose original dream was to be a Broadway actor, was talented enough to join the world-famous Cirque de Soleil.

Astroboy won P1 million, a brand-new Chevrolet Cruze, and an automatic berth in the World Championship of the Performing Arts to be held in Hollywood later this year.

He exuded confidence in his introductory video before his performance. “To the other finalists, good luck. You’re gonna need it,” he said.

Astroboy was also one of the three Champion’s Choice special prize winners, along with R-and-B singer Rhyzza and pole dancer Sustantivo.

The other five finalists were Dancing is Fun (a dance group of kids and teenagers from Catarman, Northern Samar), powerful belter Ayegee, Monica (a sand artist from Bulacan), Melbelline (a 14-year-old kundiman singer from Guiguinto, Bulacan), and Craig and Samantha (a sibling duo of ballroom dancers from New Jersey, USA who came to the show as junior champions of “Dancing with the Stars”).

Seven of the eight finalists were Hall of Fame champions, who have all won for five consecutive weeks to qualify for the Battle of Champions. Rhyzza, from San Mateo, Rizal, was a Wild Card entry.

All turned in breathtaking performances that captivated the live audience at the Quezon Memorial Circle.

Comedian Arnell Ignacio turned a lot of heads with his victory in the celebrity competition during Sunday’s results night.

A graduate of the UP Conservatory of Music, he showed off his hitherto unpublicized virtuoso skill as a pianist as Season 1 finalist Leah Patricio sang with the vocal group 92AD his own arrangement of Itchyworms’ ballad, “Beer.”

Arnell, who has served as a judge on the show numerous times, was visibly nervous as he awaited the feedback from the judges.

John Lapus, Judy Ann Santos, Audie Gemora, and Tuesday Vargas were all effusive in their praise.

“Sana noon pa namin nakita ang talent mong ‘yan!” Judy Ann said.

Arnell defeated three other celebrity contestants, Inday Garutay, and Keanna Reeves, who all partnered with finalists from the show’s previous two seasons.

Sharon Cuneta and Arnel Pineda also performed in the star-studded event hosted by Ryan Agoncillo and anchored by Alex Gonzaga, Mr. Fu, and Shalala.

TV5 rating last Sept. 18 surpasses ABS-CBN in Mega Manila!

The effort to better service the public with balanced programming finally paid off for TV5.

Just recently, the network came up second only to GMA 7, but had surpassed ABS-CBN in viewership based on AGB Mega Manila Individual Ratings.

September 18, TV5 had a 24.6% audience share compared to the 21.3% ng ABS-CBN.

GMA-7 had a 34% audience share.

Among TV5 programs credited for the weekend boost is the show “Talentadong Pinoy,” which also enjoyed a higher than usual during its September 19 episode.

Ryan Agoncillo, show figurehead and host, is proud of the results, which he said is reflective of the hard work he and the show’s production staff had continuously poured into the show.

“Hindi rin naman naging madali, matagal rin naman bago kami napansin,” said he in a taped interview aired over “Paparazzi” on September 26.

“Midnight DJ,” which is also part of the Saturday programming of the network, has also been credited for enticing weekend viewers to tune in to the channel.

“Salamat po sa inyong suporta,” Oyo Boy Sotto, the one of the series’ main cast, intoned in a separate interview.

Expected to bring in more viewers is the much-awaited new show of controversial comedian and TV host Willie Revillame.

Dubbed “Willing Willie” the show is set to start in October, that is, if the legal hassles of its host, at that point, would have been cleared.

Reports have it that Revillame is now very much willing to settle the P486 million worth of damages that ABS-CBN is asking from him.
