President Duterte declines Honorary Degree from UP!

UP Board of Regents plans on giving President Rodrigo Duterte  honoris causa of law degree as a tradition of the university which is given to the President of the Philippines. It caused an uproar among the few sectors of the society including the Office of the Student Regent and the incoming head of the UP student council.

This is what President Rodrigo Duterte said of the honorary award:

“With due respect sa University of the Philippines, I do not accept even if I was mayor.

Hindi ako tumatanggap, as a matter of personal and official policy, I do not accept awards. Wala sa pagkatao ko. Hindi ko nire-reject. To use reject… I simply declined,” paliwanag ng Pangulo nang kapanayamin sa isyu matapos ang dinaluhang command conference sa lalawigan ng Bohol kahapon.

UP, Ateneo classes to start in August will other school follow suit?

Two of the country’s top schools the University of the Philippines (UP) and Ateneo de Manila University just announced on Thursday a change in the academic calendar, shifting the opening of classes from June to August.

Classes at UP in Manila, Los Baños, Baguio, Cebu, the Visayas and Mindanao, and UP Open University will start in August and end in May, but UP Diliman, which has “not completed consultations,” and UP Integrated School will still follow the old schedule.

The first semester will run from August to December, the second semester from January to May, and a short term from June to July.

Ateneo will start the new schedule in academic year 2015-2016 in the Loyola Schools and the Professional Schools.

Ateneo Grade School and High School will retain the June to March academic calendar.

Will these changes affect other schools and universities? Are we going to see regular schools and universities opening in August becomes a norm in the Philippines in the near future?

What do you think?

UP to decide Mark Solis case next month; could lose Degree course due to stolen photos he used i several contests!

mark solis

University of the Philippines graduate student Mark Solis who used other people’s photographs in several contests, could lose his degree.

He won grand prize at the Calidad Humana “Smiles for the World” contest organized by the Embassy of Chile. It turned out, however, that the picture was lifted from the flicker account of John Gregory Smith of the Children at Risk Foundation.

The UP National College of Public Administration and Governance (UP-NCPAG) also discovered that the picture was entered by Solis thrice in various photo competitions.

Solis also joined 4 other photo essay contests using different pictures stolen from different Flicker accounts.

The contests he joined were:

  • Calidad Humana Smiles For The World
  • Mulat Maninipat Photojournalism Contest of the Union of Journalists of the Philippines-UP
  • Photo Contest of the Eastern Regional Organization for Public Administration
  • Photo Competition of the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process
  • Papworth Trust 2011
  • VinylPlus Sustainable Thinking Platform photo contest (2010-2011)
  • SoliWater and Life photo contest of the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development (2013)
  • “Iyung digital footprints naman mate-trace iyun atsaka nakita kung sino yung author. Mark Solis submitted 7 photos taken from Flicker,” said UP-NCPAG Dean Maria Fe Villamejor-Mendoza.

UP students said they are disappointed with Solis. Solis has already apologized to most of the contest organizers, as well as to the UP community.

However, his college will elevate its findings to the UP Diliman chancellor to determine the appropriate disciplinary action.

Villamejor-Mendoza said he may be stripped of his degree but she also recommends counselling.

“Nung nagkausap, kami, he was thinner, mukhang depressed”

It was also discovered that Solis failed to settle his tuition and has sought an authorization for delayed payment.

Mark Solis graduated cum laude with a degree in political science. He enrolled and attended UP Graduate School last semester.
